I usually become a vassal as soon as possible to get the free village then stack up money and units to take a castle and start my own faction, so you should be fine joining as a vassal where your at. Check the factions on the outskirt of the map (everyone but Khergits and Swadia essentially) and access the trade. Don't start trading until you find a profit of 200 denars or higher. This is a slow, but effective way to gain money quickly. In the unmodded game, you can still rejoin a different faction or support a claimant in order to end your current faction.
